5 tips to teach kids about ‘originality’ & ‘authenticity’

Editor

The latest Zooboo story book ‘Finds a story’ is all about a little child trying to write a story for their school project. The child asks around at home, neighborhood as well as looks to the TV for inspiration for their story. The plot and ending of this book led us thinking about a few issues such as ‘original thinking’ and ‘authenticity’. How many times do we come across children who are more than willing to mimic ideas from the internet/society? Are we also guilty of consciously or unconsciously guiding kids to follow a pre-planned path with no creativity of their own? Research has shown that when parents focus on ‘teaching values’ v/s ‘rules’ and encourage kids to take ‘sensible risks’ that will allow them to try new things – such children grow up to be great contributors in the society. Here are 5 simple things that YOU can do to try and inculcate the importance of original thinking, creativity, and authenticity in your young ones: Tip #1 Encourage them to always read & remember the name of the author & the illustrator This is something you can start even when kids are a few months old. Always make it a habit to read the name of the author & illustrator of the book before you begin reading it. This allows kids to understand that there is someone who has taken the effort to write and illustrate this book for them. That not all books are the same and there is a person is who thinking original ideas & is creatively presenting it for them. Tip #2 Seek books with a moral Along with picture books, try to also read out stories that have some moral attached to it. Doing this from an early age encourages kids to think about the values and consequences of their actions. Tip #3 Encourage creativity in all forms It is upto us what rules and conditioning we raise our kids with. Instead of giving them the rules of society, life and your personal set of rules, teach them the values behind it. Let them know what your family believes it and the reason behind it. For example if you want them to clean their room, rather than saying ‘Clean your room’, say ‘This is why we as a family believe in a clean and neat environment. And this is why it’s a core value to keep our belongings neat.’ Tip #4 Guide with relativity rather than absolutes If your child is drawing or painting an image of the sky, let them pick out the colours rather than giving it to them. And now if they happen to paint it pink & purple, will you tell them – The sky is blue, not pink. OR will you tell them – The sky can be blue, sometimes it can also be orange and at twilight, it can even be pink or purple! Rather than saying ‘This is a stone’, say ‘This could be a stone, or it could be Y, or it could be Z, what do you think it is?’. This allows them to let their mind run free and fosters creative thinking. It helps ‘out of the box’ ideas. Tip #5 Model ‘authenticity’ yourself If you want to raise an honest citizen who is true to their self and stands against borrowed ideas and pirated/copied work then YOU need to model this behaviour too. Show them the importance of being original by being original yourself. Don’t download that song from the internet/unofficial source. Don’t buy a book unless its author is getting their due credit. Don’t quote an idea or phrase without mentioning the source you got it from. There are small ways that kids are observing us & what we say, do & talk makes an impact. If you want your kids to be inspired to write their own story or do some original thinking then try this NEW personalized storybook by Zooboo called ‘Finds a story’. Tips & benefits of raising independent children

Editor

Younger children always seem to want to do things on their own. This tendency is the starting point of independence and it is really important for us to encourage this.   In order to help children grow into self-sufficient and successful global citizens, let us try to encourage independence while they are young. Why is it so important?   3 key benefits of raising independent kids: Confidence + sense of achievement It provides them with the belief that they are competent and capable of taking care of themselves which makes them resilient to external challenges. It makes them happy and healthy as they feel a great sense of achievement and success as a direct result of their own actions     Equips them to be decisions-makers It allows them to become good decision-makers as they have the freedom to consider various options before choosing the one they feel is best.     Develops key Life skills It gives your child a sense of importance and belonging which is essential for building social relationships and for contributing to the world. Life skills like patience, concentration, self-help, cooperation, self-discipline and self-trust are also developed     4 helpful tips to raise self-sufficient, independent children Encourage Exploration Once your children have established their sense of security, it’s down to you to encourage them to explore the world beyond your safety net. Let your kids be the eager explorers. Let them imagine freely and go on many adventures. Zooboo’s book ‘What shape would you be?’ allows kids to imagine themselves as different shapes!         Allow them to make their own decisions As they grow older, let them make their own decisions – however simple they may be. For example, in Zooboo’s personalized ‘Birthday’ book, the child decides the menu, balloon colour for his/her birthday party. They also create their own birthday banner.   You can also give them the opportunity to come up with solutions to problems. Try asking them “how?” questions such as “how can we clean up this mess we’ve made?”     Provide choices When thinking about how to encourage independence in your children, one of the easiest ways is to give them the choice. There are so many decisions that are made every day, so pose the question to them. Do you want an apple or banana today? Do you want to wear your red shoes or blue shoes?   Remember to always give them options that are both perfectly acceptable.   For example in the Zooboo book Noisy Holiday, the child finds the city to be too noisy. His/her grandparents then give them to option to spend the weekend in a farm. They don’t enforce a decision of staying in the city on their grandchild.   https://zooboostory.com/book/noisy-holiday   And then honour that choice After you offered the options and your child picked the one they want – go through with the decision. Honour their choice. If you don’t then you will land up lower their self esteem and confidence. Enlist their trust that you will respect their choice especially one that was offered by you in the first place!   For example in the Zooboo book ‘Slays the fear monster’, the child’s mom suggests different options that can make him/her feel calmer. When the child decides to try it out, their mother trusts his/her decision and helps them through it.   https://zooboostory.com/book/slays-the-fear-monster   If you’re interested in any of the personalized storybooks mentioned here, you can now order them at a discounted price! 5 games to keep kids entertained while travelling

Family trips are fun & exciting, isn’t it? But how do you keep the kids engaged during long drives, road trips, layovers or other wait times? They will eventually get bored of even the ipad/mobile and boredom can get challenging! Dodge the 42 million ‘Are we there yet?' questions by being a little prepared with some basic games & activities : ) Here our top 5 tips to keep kids entertained (or atleast engaged) during your travels! Tip #1: Count objects around you This tip is inspired from our very own (NEW!) Zooboo book ‘Traffic Jam Adventure! It’s a story about a kid stuck in a traffic jam on the way to the planetarium. The family plays a game of counting objects around them starting from 1 and sequentially going upto 10. Try this game on your next trip and see how far you can go! Clue: 1 car, 2 adults, 3 bags, 4 red cars – etc etc. @cuppycakes_muffins11 https://zooboostory.com/book/traffic-jam-adventure Personalize the book here Tip #2: Play audios of their fav songs Turn your car time into a fun karaoke session! Start by playing the audio of their favourite rhymes and gradually move on to songs. Give them some basic instruments for even more fun – guitar, xylophone, rattle – anything that gets them to sing-along and pass the time! Tip #3: Whoever spots (____) first, wins! This is one of our personal favourite games. It keeps the kids hooked for hours. Take turns to name ‘whoever spots a (fill in with a fun character/object) wins’ – and keep score for who was the first to spot this. Here are a few ready examples to get you started. Whoever spots a: policeman, traffic signal, red car, school bus, twins, ice cream parlour, truck driver, windmill – etc etc. Tip #4: Recap/Retell their favourite storybook If you want to get kids to calm down and started for naptime in your transit, you can try to get them to recap their favourite storybook. Guide and prompt them wherever required. As they zone back to their pre bedtime story they will eventually settle down and feel ready to nap (hopefully!). If not it is still a great way to recap some concepts or learn a new story. Tip #5: Play I spy Taking inspiration from the Zooboo book ‘Plays I spy’, we suggest this classic game that can be literally played anywhere! Take turn to spot an object around you and explain it to one another. Set a timer for the opposite person to guess the name of this object. Classic, simple but super effective game – isn’t it? Try out these tips during your next travel/trip and let us know what else you could think of. 6 amazing benefits of colouring books

With the increase in screen time amongst toddlers and busier lifestyles for both parents as well as grandparents – it is a good idea to keep colouring sheets or colouring books handy for your kids. Afterall, all kids love to colour right? But colouring is not just a ‘hobby’, especially for young kids. Studies have shown that colouring & drawing can have far reaching benefits that affect not only hand grip development, eye-hand coordination but also child’s confidence & language skills. 6 amazing benefits of colouring books on child’s development: Pre writing skills & fine motor skills Doodling, scribbling, drawing and colouring are all forms of pre-writing skills. Before toddlers are taught standing and sleeping line it is important for them to get comfortable with a pencil/crayon. And so colouring encourages them to pick up a crayon and this in turn enhances their fine motor skills and pincer grip. Further when they try to colour a specific spot inside a cartoon/character – they are developing their eye and hand coordination as well. Colour recognition As kids grow they start to identify the common colours around them. And ofcourse colouring books are a great way for them to start recognizing the colours that they draw with as well as distinguish primary, secondary and tertiary colours. Relaxing & calming technique Sometimes children get excited or over active due to some internal or external stimulants. Colouring is a great way to get kids to calm down. They will sit in one place and doodle for a long time. This also helps them relax their gross muscles as well as their cognitive activity. Many parents find colouring as a great way to engage their kids while eating outdoors/in a restaurant after the kids have finished their meals. Form of expression Before children can learn to speak in sentences, they will communicate using few words or broken lines. Many kids find it difficult to communicate and it leads to pent up frustration. Colouring and drawing is a good way to let kids express themselves. Any form of art is a mode of expression for kids. Helps to revise & recap any concept As kids get older they are introduced to various concepts in pre-school/day care like zoo & farm animals, planets & solar system, parts of the body, opposites. So colouring books can be a fun way to recap and revise some of these concepts. Especially without seeming like ‘study’ time. First step to building creative skills Kids love creative activities like sticking, pasting, cutting. But before they get to the more complicated forms of art, colouring is the first step towards encouraging their creative skills. Once they get comfortable and gain confidence with their fine motor skills, you can then introduce them to sticking and baby-friendly scissors. Are you looking for some beautifully illustrated colouring books for your kids? Guess what... you can now personalize a colouring book with your kid's name & character (boy/girl)! 6 tips to help kids tackle phobias (from the book ‘Slays the fear monster’)

Editor

What is a phobia? Fear is a normal reaction to a threat while a phobia leads to a fear response even when you're not in danger. In general, Fear is characterized by mild to moderate (sometimes reasonably high) anxiety while phobia is distinguished by a very high anxiety level. Is it common? According to Rochester Medical Center, ‘All children have fears at some point in their life.’ When untreated, phobias can become a lifelong issue. So treatment is important. What can we do to help kids tackle them? The URMC Encyclopaedia says that kids may need Individual or cognitive behavioural therapy as well as Family therapy. Parents play a vital role in any treatment process. You can start early by addressing this topic through BOOKS. Zooboo’s personalized story book ‘Slays the fear monster’ is a great first step in helping kids understand their phobias. Authored by renowned clinical psychologist, Dr. Nisha Vidyasagar – this book beautifully shows us 6 handy tips to tackle fears in kids with engaging illustrations. Discover 6 tips shared in this book: #1 Talk to someone Kids should be encouraged to talk to someone they trust like parents, grandparents, siblings and first family. No matter how small or irrational their fear might seem, as parents we must not ridicule them. Acknowledge their anxiety and be there for them as they try to cope. #2 Positive affirmations Repeating positive affirmations like “I am strong, I am capable, I am brave etc.” and other such phrases pertaining to their particular phobia helps. It makes kids feel confident and they are mentally better placed when faced by the said fear. #3 Deep breaths A great calming technique (even for adults!) is concentrating on your breath. This book talks about a simple technique for kids. They try to imagine a flower on their palm and try to take in its fragrance by breathing deeply and slowly. #4 Draw & tear up your fear Dr. Nisha says that kids can try to draw their fear on paper. Followed by tearing it up and throwing it away. This symbolic act can help little kids towards mental confidence of overpowering their fear. #5 Hugs help too Simple touch of hand or a hug can help your child feel momentarily safe and secure. It soothes their mind and they feel self-assured #6 Trial & error Whatever course of treatment you take – whether it’s cognitive therapy, family therapy, just talking to your child, letting them draw it out or repeating affirmations – a trial of facing their fear and trying to cope with it will help. They can practically apply these tricks (in your presence) and feel more confident. Eventually, a trial and error method helps them put their learning to test. Deep breathing helps kids calm down Fears and phobias are common in all kids They can be real fears or imaginary like 'monster under the bed' Hugging helps kids feel self assured & safe We hope that these tips were helpful to you.
