Let’s help our kids to socialize after lockdowns!
Perhaps the most profound way how the lockdowns have impacted kids is their friendships. Social distancing and school closures have meant making friends & socializing is limited to virtual meets. As parents, this change has definitely worried us. Socializing is vital for our kids’ well-being. All we want is to make their childhoods as normal, stress-free, and as happy as possible. The good news is that as the world begins to open up again our children will soon be able to interact normally with their friends! And so here are some helpful tips to make their journey towards socializing as seamless as possible. #1 Work on YOUR expectations Firstly, don’t expect everything to go perfectly. “It’s important to have realistic expectations and understand that this might just be a little hard, and that’s OK” – says Psychologist Pankti Gada. As kids start socializing beyond their families, some discomfort is to be expected. After all, they are interacting with others after a long time and might not be able to leap onto being around people so easily. While not all children will experience difficulty transitioning back to offline schools & classes, some may. So keep your expectations in check from the beginning so that you can tackle any scenarios with much more ease. #2 Watch for signs of stress Keep an eye out for any change in behaviour by your kids. Moody-ness, stress-eating etc. Don’t jump to conclusions but try to keep your communication with them open. #3 Books will help! When kid’s are not open to communicating directly, you can always take help from books. Start with reading to them about books that show social interaction. Zooboo’s personalized storybook ‘Get’s wings’ is all about a kid dreaming about flying – on the way back from school with his/her mom. Start by personalizing this book for your child and getting them into the conversation about school. You can also try the ‘Birthday’ book and start the conversation about meeting new & old friends. Another personalized book ‘Lost Smile’ is a great way to discuss emotions and how to cope with them. Order your books here. #4 Start small with playdates Start with baby steps like a 1-1 playdate with a child their age. Or a virtual meet with all their classmates. Starting slow will ensure that you child is not overwhelmed by big crowds. #5 Show & tell Show you child pictures of their new/old school. Also show them pictures of the park, zoo etc to mentally familiarize them with places outside their own home. Personalize some storybooks on ‘Zoo’ & ‘Theme parks’ with Zooboo. #6 Play socially distanced games If you have access to a park you can arrange a treasure hunt with other kids. This is a good start for your children to meet other children in a socially distanced manner. Eventually, you can move to a spread out picnic after your game! #7 Extra cuddles will help! As kids experience some unfamiliarity especially with a school classroom, they might need a little more comfort than usual. Include some extra bedtime cuddles to make them feel mor secure and increase their sense of comfort! As the world is opening up and schools are also re-starting, naturally we as parents are worried about how our kids will adapt to socializing after so many months spent amidst few adults! While we do all we can to help kids into this transition, also keep in mind that kids can surprise us many-a-times by adjusting better than our expectations. So ‘chill-out’ a bit dear parents and don’t let your stress get the better of you :)

6 Tips to set sustainable ‘Reading Goals for 2022’ with your kids!
The New Year is a great time for those looking to make a fresh start. It gives us all hope for new beginnings and healthy habits. It is a good idea to let children develop a positive attitude towards reading from an early age. Here are some quick tips to help your kids set sustainable ‘Reading Goals for 2022!’ Working towards reading goals not only improves your child’s literacy but research says that completing goals provides children with a sense of accomplishment and builds their self-esteem. Make a plan/chart: Make it fun start for them by first drawing up a chart/routine to mark off each goal. Tip: Keep space for stars (or rockets or dinosaurs!) for each baby step towards the final goal. source: Just a girl and her blog Start with the basic: I will read X number of books this week Once they start finishing these small goals, you can encourage them for bigger goals like I will read a new author every week. Or I will read X number of books this year. Older children can read the books themselves, while younger kids may need to read with adults or have the books read to them. The goal at younger ages is to familiarize children with books and instill a love of stories and reading. You can try personalized storybooks that feature the child’s name & character throughout the story. These books help engage and entertain young readers, as they feel they are the STAR of the storybook. Order some such books for your kids here. https://zooboostory.com/ Add some twist with interactive reading/role play: I will read X number of books to my sibling/cousin/friend this year. Add in a few evenings of enacting some books, staging a drama or role play with friends. Re-living their storybook characters adds excitement which boosts further reading. @mummas_littlemunchkins To make the goals sustainable through the year, start with small goals & celebrate small victories.Tips for some smaller goals for the younger kids: I will read about a new topic every month I will learn about the authors of the books I read I will learn xx new words from my books every week Attaining a reading goal should be cause for celebration. While you have many possible rewards for reaching reading goals, the most appropriate reward is a book. A personalized book like ‘Birthday’ or ‘Lost Smile’ will be a constant reminder of the child’s achievement, as well as a treasured keepsake. Track these goals Create some Prints to keep track here or Print a Restickable customized calendar here. Stick these in an area that is accessible to your child. Keep tracking the goals to give your kids a practice of conscientiousness. https://www.zoomin.com/calendars/restickable-calendar-6x8 Join them by setting your own reading goals! Children learn best by what they observe. So join them with your own reading chart or read your book once while they read theirs. Always carry a few books while travelling. These small cues help children develop a life-long friendship with books. Mom2treasure We hope these tips help you raise a budding bookworm in 2022. Help your child become a confident independent reader!
Parents often put in a lot of effort to research which book is right for their child at which age. And rightly so, because an age-appropriate book definitely makes the reading experience a whole lot different. But what about the TYPE of book format? Isn’t it important to gauge the readiness of your child to be an independent reader? The answer is YES it is! Picking the right book format – softcover or hardcover - and transitioning to another can be tricky for some kids. That is precisely why we at Zooboo offer a wide choice in the type of book you’d like for your child. Let us guide you on which Zooboo book format is best suited for your child! Reading WITH parents Recommended: 5.5”x5.5” HARDCOVER When your child is reading along with you, they are probably a little young. The hardbound pages help them gain the confidence to flip a book on their own. And since you’re mostly reading to/with them, the 5.5”x5.5” works perfectly fine at this stage. Starting to read with AND without parents Recommended: 8”x8” HARDCOVER You can gradually transition to the large size book as they will start to want to read parts of the book on their own so the larger font & illustrations will help here. Since you can start leaving them alone with their book, it is important to keep the book in hardcover format. Transitioning from hardcover to softcover Recommended: Upgrade to a ‘waterproof LUSTRE’ finish To make this jump as accident-free as possible, you can upgrade your softcover books to a premium waterproof paper with a lustre finish. This paper quality will provide your child with a lot of sturdiness while they flip pages on their own with or without supervision. Transition to becoming an independent reader Recommended: 8”x8” SOFTCOVER While you will always continue to read together with your child, you can gradually encourage your child to read books on their own, in their free time. At this stage, you can move to a softcover book BUT we advise a 8”x8” book size. The bigger page size enables kids to move pages freely. You can always opt for the premium lustre page finish for this size as well. Independent readers Recommended: 5.5”x5.5” SOFTCOVER Your independent young reader can now definitely graduate to a softcover book format without any hesitations! The 5.5”x5.5” size is handy, easy to carry anywhere and lightweight enough to make it the perfect travel companion. All Zooboo books have rounded edges for child safety. In general, hardcover books work well for younger kids and for those who love to carry books on-the-go. Softcover books are fine for older kids and for those looking for an inexpensive option! Zooboo recommended size for ALL kids: 8”x8” HARDCOVER. Because afterall, a book in which your child is the HERO of the story should be preserved as a keepsake forever right!? :D @vandita.momandmore
