6 tips to help kids tackle phobias (from the book ‘Slays the fear monster’)

Editor

What is a phobia? Fear is a normal reaction to a threat while a phobia leads to a fear response even when you're not in danger. In general, Fear is characterized by mild to moderate (sometimes reasonably high) anxiety while phobia is distinguished by a very high anxiety level. Is it common? According to Rochester Medical Center, ‘All children have fears at some point in their life.’ When untreated, phobias can become a lifelong issue. So treatment is important. What can we do to help kids tackle them? The URMC Encyclopaedia says that kids may need Individual or cognitive behavioural therapy as well as Family therapy. Parents play a vital role in any treatment process. You can start early by addressing this topic through BOOKS. Zooboo’s personalized story book ‘Slays the fear monster’ is a great first step in helping kids understand their phobias. Authored by renowned clinical psychologist, Dr. Nisha Vidyasagar – this book beautifully shows us 6 handy tips to tackle fears in kids with engaging illustrations. Discover 6 tips shared in this book: #1 Talk to someone Kids should be encouraged to talk to someone they trust like parents, grandparents, siblings and first family. No matter how small or irrational their fear might seem, as parents we must not ridicule them. Acknowledge their anxiety and be there for them as they try to cope. #2 Positive affirmations Repeating positive affirmations like “I am strong, I am capable, I am brave etc.” and other such phrases pertaining to their particular phobia helps. It makes kids feel confident and they are mentally better placed when faced by the said fear. #3 Deep breaths A great calming technique (even for adults!) is concentrating on your breath. This book talks about a simple technique for kids. They try to imagine a flower on their palm and try to take in its fragrance by breathing deeply and slowly. #4 Draw & tear up your fear Dr. Nisha says that kids can try to draw their fear on paper. Followed by tearing it up and throwing it away. This symbolic act can help little kids towards mental confidence of overpowering their fear. #5 Hugs help too Simple touch of hand or a hug can help your child feel momentarily safe and secure. It soothes their mind and they feel self-assured #6 Trial & error Whatever course of treatment you take – whether it’s cognitive therapy, family therapy, just talking to your child, letting them draw it out or repeating affirmations – a trial of facing their fear and trying to cope with it will help. They can practically apply these tricks (in your presence) and feel more confident. Eventually, a trial and error method helps them put their learning to test. Deep breathing helps kids calm down Fears and phobias are common in all kids They can be real fears or imaginary like 'monster under the bed' Hugging helps kids feel self assured & safe We hope that these tips were helpful to you. If you’re looking for a personalized book like 'Slays the fear monster' for your kids, or want to gift one to someone you know – head to the website and personalize this book right away! 5 Benefits of reading NATURE related books to your kids

Editor

Last year we had discussed about the benefits of personalization in storybooks in this article - 6 benefits of personalized storybooks. Now with kids being allowed outdoors once again, it’s time to understand why books on nature are so impactful to your child’s development. Here are 5 benefits of reading nature-related books to your kids: #1 Kids learn to appreciate nature Reading books that involve nature, outdoors, animals etc. to your children can help them understand more about the environment, build their interest and curiosity about nature, and may even lead them to want to take action to help protect the planet. #2 It serves as a positive distraction Obviously, reading is a way to divert your kids attention as they focus on the story they are reading or listening to. But especially reading about nature in particular can help kids experience, think about, and visualize the beauty of nature. Stories with natural, whimsical imagery can transport your kids to gorgeous, serene locations, such as a zoo, nature park, mystical forest, or even a farm full of birds. This relaxing escape is more important than ever for kids as we face stressful times. #3 Sparks feelings of wonder in kids Reading about nature helps spark awe and wonder in children, which ultimately makes them feel happier and calmer. Awe is an emotion that allows us to test our concept of time and gives us the sense of being small in a grand universe, and helps us to truly be in the moment. We might feel chills up our spine, goosebumps, or even tears in our eyes during an awe-inspiring moment like seeing a rainbow, gazing up at the stars, or reading about a fascinating new animal species discovered. #4 They come to know the benefits of nature Another really wonderful benefit of reading a book about nature is that it allows kids to learn about the various benefits of nature. Further, these benefits also have a calming effect on kids. Scientists have discovered that one of the reasons why nature is so soothing to us is that many patterns naturally occur in our environment. Our minds are naturally attracted to and soothed by patterns in leaves, tree bark, tree rings, waves, clouds, shells, feather, snowflakes, and more. There are so many amazing patterns of nature to look for both outdoors and in children’s story books. A lot of nature based books feature animals in them. Most children love animals, and numerous studies show that animals can help relax children, bringing them so much joy and awe whether this is a pet or an animal they see in their dream, at a zoo, or in a story. #5 Calms them down (great for bedtime) Books also help kids escape from the present moment into a world of imagination that captures all their attention. They may become so completely engaged in the story to the point of reaching a calm, meditative state that is great for dozing off. Additionally, bedtime stories bring you closer to your child and help them feel safe and secure so they can get to sleep easily. Zooboo’s range of nature-related personalized storybooks are the perfect choice for bedtime, as they transport kids to a magical natural environment filled with animals, flowers, trees, water, and more. And so here are FIVE activity ideas based on the concepts covered in the 5 new Zooboo storybooks. Enjoy! Idea #1 Book: A1 Summer - this book is all about spending quality time with friends and family and bonding over the simple things in life. Activity: Organize family events once a week or once a month for the special bonding time. How? Recreate some events from the book like: Picnic at the terrace or garden or even living room Story telling competition Drawing/ origami / art & craft competition Organize a carnival games evening with the neighbourhood! Idea #2 Book: Is your cat in the Zoo? - This book is all about a child searching for their lost cat and taking help from different animals in the Zoo Activity: Play the ‘Hot & Cold’ game. How to play? Pick a toy cat/dog to hide in the house. You and your kid take turns to ‘search for it’. While searching, if the searcher is not at all close to the item, the hider says, “You're cold,” but as the searcher gets closer to the hidden item, hider responds, “Getting warmer…” and when they get very close to the item, hider says, “You're hot!” The verbal temperature becomes an indicator in finding the toy. Idea #3 Book: What shape would you be? - This book is all about identifying different shapes that are commonly seen around us Activity: Spot objects in the surroundings. How? Observe your surroundings and take turns to spot shapes in your vicinity – start with 2D shapes and gradually move to 3D shapes. Some examples: Door is rectangle, plate is circle, clock is square – etc. P.S: This is also a great game to play while travelling! Idea #4 Book: Lost Smile - This book is all about a child feeling sad and searching for their smile which is lost. Activity: Create a 'feelings book' for your child to fill in every night How? Encourage your child to draw & write in their feelings journal every day. They can draw/write one line about any 1 strong emotion that they felt through the day. This helps them to understand their feelings in retrospect and ponder over their reactions. Let your child draw and write in their feelings journal Example of an entry in the feelings journal Example of an entry in the feelings journal Idea #5 Book: A Surprise for- this book is all about learning different opposites while exploring a day out with daddy Activity: Play the game ‘Simon says – do the opposite!’ How? Every time Simon says to do something, everyone must do the opposite. Just like in the regular version of Simon Says, players should ignore all commands that don’t begin with the phrase, “Simon Says” and continue doing the action just prior to the directive. Each Zooboo book is filled with so many learning concepts, new words, interesting plots, artistic illustrations and more.
