The festival of colours and water is here – Holi hai! While it is important to teach children about all Indian festivals, it is equally important to show them environmentally & socially sustainable ways to celebrate them!
Here are 6 ideas from Team Zooboo to celebrate Holi without any wastage of water, toxic colours or smoke & fume of the Holi pyre. Try them out with your kids and help them get into the spirit of Holi!
After all, don’t you agree it’s time we change the mantra to ‘Burana na KARO, Holi Hai’ instead!? 🙂
#1 Water Play with toys!
Water is one of the key part of Holi-Dhuleti celebrations. But we can try to involve kids in different water activities that allow them to have fun with water (splash, splash) and yet involve minimum water wastage!
Try setting up a toy-washing day for your kids and their friends!
Just fill a few big tubs with water & kid-friendly soap. Bring out their plastic toys, throw in a few brushes and watch them enjoy!
P.S: You got yourself sparkling clean toys as well 😀
#2 Create your own colours!
Avoid toxic Holi colours as they leave irreparable damage on children’s sensitive skin. Why not create some simple colours at home?

You could try buying organic non-toxic Holi colours online too – try this.
#3 Painting, colours & nature!
Another fun activity where kids can be safely involved with colours is painting! Try painting with a twist:
Provide kids with paints but make the brushes out of natural elements like twigs, leaves, flowers. Try to incorporate different types of leaves for different brush strokes. Involving nature in kids’ activities is a great way to encourage their creativity.
You can teach your kids about primary and secondary colours and how to make NEW colours by mixing them.
Try Zooboo’s personalized storybook I Spy for this concept. It can work as a wonderful Holi Gift as well!
#4 Holi bonfire with props
To explain to kids the reason for celebrating Holi, try to set up a mock Holika Dahan with simple props. We can encourage kids to understand the concept of ending evil and triumph of good over evil without any of the pollution caused by actually burning the Holi bonfire.

You can make it from scratch like this, or make it with your kids by adding ready thandai syrup in cold milk!
